It's a very fine life-mask and excellent reconstruction of an interesting-looking sitterā¦ Just not of Robespierre.

The physionotrace is key. The method used to draw a physionotrace gives the sitter's profile from life. The shape of the nose is not the same at all. For the same reason, the pastel-tinted anonymous physionotrace used by Scurr and Martin on their biographies is not him.Silverwhistlehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00681706061490836033noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8832859209231480725.post-21028131542351131042013-12-28T09:13:59.727-08:002013-12-28T09:13:59.727-08:00Yes, I remember, you wrote about his death mask. We're not used to the sight of defacing scars etc. any more.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8832859209231480725.post-43558272653282256272013-12-22T02:12:38.119-08:002013-12-22T02:12:38.119-08:00Thank you for the reference. The reconstructions here seem a bit more nuanced than the "mug-shot" view that was widely published. Also informative to have a photo of the original plaster mask. He certainly looks more pockmarked from this than I had appreciated from pictures of other examples like the one in the Hutton Collection or the one in the Carnavalet which is (I think) a bronze.Rodama1789https://www.blogger.com/profile/06617445289314104257noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8832859209231480725.post-53110379932655655422013-12-18T10:29:23.205-08:002013-12-18T10:29:23.205-08:00Nowadays photoshop is used to turn people into fla...Nowadays photoshop is used to turn people into flawless amenities - why shouldn't the painters of the 18th century had been less careful in retouche of nature? ;)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
