A spa town: Plombières in the earlier 18th century

Still in Lorraine,  welcome news was announced in December  that the French State has pledged 7 million euros towards a rescue package to save the spa of Plombières-les-Bains,  its patrimony and architecture. The baths at Plombières, which still represent the lifeblood of the little town, have been entirely closed down since the end of 2024  when the owners of the facilities, the AVEC Group, went into liquidation.

The real heyday of  Plombières as a fashionable resort was was in Napoleonic times and, later, during the Second Empire, but its growth is already evident in Lorraine's years of economic revival and urban renewal under Duke Leopold and King Stanislas.
